foundation
Foundation is a sheet of beeswax embossed with the hexagonal pattern of the cells the bees would normally make from their wax glands whilst in a cluster. Foundation is fastened into the moveable frames, in our case made of wood, and put into a hive for the bees to make their comb where we desire, rather than in [laces and directions they would choose for themselves. The main uses for foundation are to replace older comb in the hive, to expand a nucleus or start a swarm off. We ourselves use 3 standard sizes of foundation in our hives and two standard weights (thicknesses) which gives 4 lengths of candle and as many weights as sheets can be wound round a wick up to about 2½" diameter.
